The last few years has seen a renewed interest in the processes of
programming, mainly caused by the rise in popularity of Extreme
Programming and the Agile Methodologies. Bookshops, journals, and web
sites are chock-full of material on how their new latest approach will
make everyone hyper-productive, churning out bug-free, infinitely
extensible software at a rate never before imagined. But few authors
or presenters have learnt from the true masters. Beck and Fowler may
have displaced Weinberg and Constantine, who in turn displaced Knuth
and Kernighan, but in this presentation we will go back to the basics
and rediscover the simple truths of programming we learnt as children,
but have since mostly forgotten - the lessons taught by Goldilocks,
Rapunzel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White,
Rumplestiltskin, and Hansel and Gretel.
